Henry W. Bailey, Md

d. September 24, 2010

Augusta, GA---Henry Wright Bailey, M.D., 84, went to his Redeemer on September 24, 2010, at Trinity Hospital.

He was the cherished husband of the late Gene Goode Bailey, their devotion lasting sixty years. He was a loving father to Grace Bailey Heck (Mrs. Jeffrey James Heck) and Henry W. Bailey, Jr., of the Augusta area. He was a beloved grandfather of Eva Burneko Medin (Mrs. Christer Jan Medin) and great-grandfather of Nora Grace Medin, of Sweden.

The son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Paul Baxter Bailey, Sr., Dr. Bailey was born in Augusta and graduated from Richmond Academy. During the war, he served thirty-four months in the Navy (1943-46). Dr. Bailey attended the University of Virginia, the University of Georgia and was a 1951 graduate of the Medical College of Georgia, where he was a member of the Chi Alpha Chapter of Phi Rho Sigma medical fraternity. He completed his internship at Brooke Army Hospital, Fort Sam Houston, Texas, (1951-52) and served as Battalion Surgeon, 47th Division Artillery, at Fort Rucker, Alabama (1952-53). In 1957, Dr. Bailey completed his surgical residency at University and Talmadge Memorial Hospitals in Augusta, Georgia. Opening an office in 1958, he practiced general surgery for 35 years and mentored surgical residents for 20 years at MCG. Certified by the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Bailey was admitted to fellowship by the Southeastern Surgical Congress (1967) and the American College of Surgeons (1969). In 1967, he was chief of staff at University Hospital. Recommended for his residency on the basis of “his professional ability and his high moral and mental attributes,” Dr. Bailey trusted God to guide his hands and mind in the surgical care of his patients. Dr. Bailey was proud to be a member of The William H. Moretz Surgical Society, created as a common bond among surgeons of the Medical College of Georgia. He was also an associate member of the Richmond County Medical Society.

In retirement, Dr. Bailey enjoyed continuing his medical education, managing real estate interests, playing bridge and the occasional golf game. In addition, he and his wife took pleasure walking on their tree farm in Burke County, taking road trips around the United States, and faithfully caring for their parents.

In the community, Dr. Bailey was active in the Uptown Kiwanis Club and the Beech Island Agricultural Club. He endowed an Augusta State University scholarship in memory of his mother and supported community concerns throughout his life. He was a charter member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, and worshiped at Christ Church Presbyterian under the ministry of Dr. Gordon K. Reed, who officiated his private graveside service, on September 27, 2010.

If so desired, memorials may be made to the Daniel B. Sullivan, M.D., Endowment through the University Health Care Foundation, Suite D-1, 2100 Central Avenue, Augusta, Georgia 30904.
