Augusta, GA---Jack E. Bell, MD entered into rest on Sunday, December 19, 2010 at his residence. It was very important, to Dr. Bell that he be at home, where his daughter, Susan and granddaughter, Lenora were at his side when he went home to be with the Lord.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, December 23, 2010, at Westover Memorial Park with Reverend Alan Faulkner officiating.
Dr. Bell was a member of St. John United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia and the Medical College of Georgia, where he graduated 1st in his class. Dr. Bell was a member of the Richmond County Medical Society and the Medical Association of Georgia. He was a former Chief of Pediatrics, at University Hospital and was the first physician in Georgia to successfully treat and save a child with spinal meningitis and encephalitis. Dr. Bell practiced medicine in Augusta for 37 years.
Dr. Bell was a former member of the Augusta Country Club, was a member of the Alexander Masonic Lodge and was a 32nd degree Mason. He was the first life member of the Family Y and was instrumental in saving the Y, by recommending the sale of life memberships and purchased the initial membership. He was an avid fan and supporter of the University of Georgia Bulldogs.
Dr. Bell enjoyed traveling, fishing and exercising. He was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his parents and fifteen brothers and sisters and by his wife, Edna Dunaway Bell and daughter, Linda Bell Edmonds.
Survivors include his daughters, Jean Bell Etheridge and husband, Ken of Augusta, GA, Nancy Bell Veres of Weaverville, NC and Susan Bell Curwen of Augusta, GA, grandchildren, Natalie Veres, Audrey-Lynn Veres McGimsey, Jesse Veres, Anna Veres, Moriah Veres, Casey Bradford, Kelly Etheridge, Paul Edmonds and Lenora Curwen and eight great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 22, 2010, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Platt’s Crawford Avenue.
The family would like to express their deep gratitude to Dr. Ray Johnson, Dr. Charles Coleman, Dr. Igor Stojanov and Odyssey Hospice for the loving care and attention given to Dr. Bell.
