Raleigh, NC---Mrs. Marjorie Whitaker Barrow, a long time Augusta resident, on Walton Way and summer resident of Blowing Rock, NC died Sunday, September 12, 2010 in Raleigh, NC, after a brief illness.
She was born October 2, 1913 in Asheboro, NC to Clara Spencer and Lonnie Lafayette Whitaker. She was a graduate of Women’s College in Greensboro with a degree in business. After graduation, Marjorie worked in Raleigh, NC for Carolina Power and Light, met and married John Knox Barrow, Jr. and moved to Zabulon, NC where she began her family. Later Marjorie moved to Ahoskie, NC where she lived for a number of years and raised two sons. From Ahoskie, she moved to Augusta, GA, when her husband became an executive with the Georgia Pacific Corporation. During the past eight years, she has lived in Raleigh, NC.
While living in Augusta, she was an active member, of Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church, the Augusta Country Club, the Sand Hills Garden Club, the Colonial Dames and as a flower show judge. Marjorie’s hobbies included traveling and gardening.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband John Knox Barrow, Jr. and her son, Hunter Spencer Barrow.
She is survived by her son, John K. Barrow, III and his wife Carol of Basking Ridge, NJ, Cande (Mrs. H. Spencer) Barrow of Raleigh, NC, grandsons, John Knox Barrow, IV of New York City, Hunter Christopher Barrow and wife Penelope and great granddaughter, Hannah Lane Barrow of Atlanta, GA, Byron Spencer Barrow of Atlanta, GA, Samuel Lane Barrow and wife Yvonne and great granddaughter, Spencer Louise Barrow of Raleigh, NC.
A graveside service will be held for friends and family at 10:00 AM, Thursday, September 16, 2010 at the Historic Oakwood Cemetery, 701 Oakwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Blowing Rock Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1270, Blowing Rock, NC 28605. Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary’s Street, Raleigh, NC, is in charge of arrangements.
