Mary Helen Crews

Mary Helen Hembree Crews passed in her sleep on November 17, 2023. She was born on May 24, 1933, in Paulding County, Georgia to Elsie Mae and Charlie Andrew Hembree. After graduating from high school, Helen went to work for a major insurance company in Atlanta, Georgia, where she met her future husband Charles G. Crews, a field engineer with IBM. After his job took them to the Augusta, Georgia, they settled in Evans, Georgia. She and Charles were married for 61 years, before his passing May 21, 2020.

They were very involved in their church, First Baptist of Evans. Helen volunteered in the nursery, with youth activities and was a Sunday school teacher. Helen also served her community, cherishing her time working in the Counselor’s Office at Evans High and volunteering at the former University Hospital, now named Piedmont Augusta. Helen’s highest love was for her faith, followed by family, actively communicating her affection and support.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Charles G. Crews, her brother, Boyce Monroe Hembree.

Helen is survived by her sisters, Betty Mae Garrison, and Ruby Lee Owens; her brothers , Charles Hembree and Dewey Hembree; her children; David C. Crews (Ruth), Mark S. Crews (Windy) and Diane Shafer (Tom), her grandchildren; William C. Crews (Marie), Savannah E. Mundy (Matt), Caroline Crews, Steven Crews, Alexis Shafer, Christen Shafer and Thomas Shafer III. She is also survived by her great grandchildren; Piper E. Mundy, Elisabeth G. Mundy, Charlotte N. Mundy, Boyce H. Mundy, and Charles I. Crews, as well as her many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held on November 21, 2023, at 1:00 in Platt’s Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be at noon. Internment will be at Bellevue Memorial Gardens following the service.
