Appling, GA---Mrs. Ruth Clark Schlein, 83, entered into rest on Monday, July, 18, 2011 at University Hospital.

Funeral services will be held today Friday, July 22, 2011 at 11:00 am in the Platt’s Belair Road Chapel, Evans, GA, with Reverend Dan White officiating. Interment will follow at West View Cemetery, Augusta, GA.

Mrs. Schlein was born in Augusta, but lived most of her youth in Hephzibah, GA. She was a Licensed Practical Nurse, having graduated from the old University Hospital School of Nursing in 1962. She served as President of the Georgia Association of Licensed Practical Nurses, 10th Division, for 8 years. During her administration, she was instrumental in the governmental process which secured the rights of LPN’s, to administer medications. Mrs. Schlein retired from nursing after 30 years of service. Following her retirement and because of her love of gardening, she attended Augusta Technical College where she studied Horticulture. During World War II, she worked in the defense industry and was a volunteer for the USO and the American Red Cross. Mrs. Schlein was a Charter Member of North Columbia Church.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, of 54 years, Herman W. Schlein and beloved son, Lester H. Schlein. She was also preceded in death by her twin sister, Marie Saxon, five other siblings and their parents.

Survivors include her son, Calbert L. Schlein (Kay) of Appling, GA, daughter, Connie S. Saxon (Sam) of Birmingham, AL, daughter in law, Diane A. Schlein of Augusta, GA, eight granddaughters, Leslie Mills (Jim), Amy Munford (Brian), Samantha Young (Ross), Laurel Saxon, Rachael Schultheis (Todd), Angela Schlein, Carol Elaine Schlein and Callie Schlein, five great grandchildren, special friend, Gerard Cummings and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Pallbearers will be Louis Schlein, Justin Young, Benny Griner, Denny Griner, Coley Clark and Ross Young.
