Vance Earl Logan, Jr.

Mr. Vance Earl Logan Jr, 89, went home to be with his Savior, Jesus Christ on Monday, February 5, 2018 at his residence. Vance was the son of Vance Earl and Frances Floyd Logan.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am on Thursday, February 8,2018 at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church with Father Vernon Knight and Father Mike Ingram as celebrants. Interment will follow at Westover Memorial Park. Visitation with the family will be held at Platt’s Crawford Avenue on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm.

He was preceded in death by his lovely wife, Elizabeth Carson Mulherin Logan after 64 years of marriage, baby girl Frances, his parents, a sister Doris Williams, and brothers John Arthur Logan and Norman Kent Logan.

Vance was a gifted athlete earning a basketball and baseball scholarship to Presbyterian College in 1945. At college, he was a member of the honor society for history-Alpha Lambda Tau and the ROTC in which he received the “Best Drilled Cadet” award. His competitive nature and relentless determination lead him to earn the Block P (letter) for four years. In addition to his studies and athletic achievements, Vance served on student council his junior year. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in history in 1949.

After college, Vance signed a baseball contract playing minor league with the Cleveland Indian Baseball Organization. During this time, he met the love of his life, Betty, and they began married life on June 30, 1951. His baseball career was placed “on hold” due to being drafted by the military. He served as an infantry officer in the Army. Because of his leadership abilities, Vance was promoted to first lieutenant. He served in the Korean War earning the bronze star.

After completing his military duties, he started a rewarding career at E.I.DuPont de Nemors. During his 35 year career, he was promoted to one of the four area managers in the reactor department. After retirement form E.I.Dupont de Nemors, he immediately went to work for Westinghouse in the engineering department for 5 years.

Vance was a member of Goshen Country Club, most of his adult years. He was a charter member and served twice as President of Forest Hills Association. He was an avid golfer shooting his age thirty-three times beginning at the age of sixty-six. The highlight of his golfing years was serving as a volunteer for forty years at the Augusta National Golf Association.
Vance had a love for country music and played the guitar which he shared with others. He was a former member of the Board of Directors of the Richmond County Booster Club.

Survivors include his sons, James Logan (Shirley), Charles Logan (Joann), Vance Logan (Kim); daughters, Mayclare Scherer (Dan), Anne Marie Harvey, Carson Johnson (Mark); 19 grandchildren; and 39 great- grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Vance is survived by sisters, Delores Tankersley (Albert) and Diane Clark (Phillip); sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Mulherin, Barbara Mulherin, and Louise Mulherin.

Special heartfelt thanks to the numerous caregivers who lovingly cared for Mr. Logan and spent countless hours and devotion to his health and wellbeing for many years.

Pallbearers will be Joseph Scherer, Charles Scherer, Richard Scherer, Bernard Scherer, Shane Harvey, Joshua Logan, Christopher Page, Cameron Logan, Matthew Logan, Earl Logan, and Timothy Marino. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Forest Hills Golf Association.
