Mrs. Anita Woodruff Tanner, beloved wife of 29 years of the late Wendell Tanner, entered into rest on Thursday, June 2, 2022 at Piedmont Augusta Hospital.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, June 4, 2022 at St. Paul’s Church with the Rev. Eric Biddy officiating. Interment will be at the church in the Colonial Gardens and a reception will follow in Tyler Hall after the services.
Anita was born into a military family at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri to the late William and Anna Lee Woodruff. She graduated from Westside High School, before earning her master’s degree in education from The University of South Carolina. She taught Social studies for over 30 years at Lucy Craft Laney High School and was awarded with a place in the Who’s Who of American Teachers for several years in a row. As a member of St Paul’s Church, she was very active in parish activities. She was a former vestry member, and was long time chairperson of the Hospitality Committee, where she was in charge of hospitality and food service at Tuesday Music Live. She was known as a kind and gracious hostess. Some of the other church committees she was involved with were the History Committee, the Outreach Committee, and was a very enthusiastic member of the Book Club. Anita was the chairperson of St. Paul’s Manna Pantry and also ran the mentoring program at Houghton Elementary and was coordinator of Veteran’s Outreach at the Georgia War Veteran’s Nursing Home. She was also known as an avid Georgia Bulldogs and Atlanta Braves fan.
She is survived by her sister, Judy Woodruff (Albert R. Hunt), her nephews, Jeffrey Hunt and Benjamin Hunt, her niece, Hemi Hunt, a great nephew, Kai Woodruff Hunt, her step children, Douglas Tanner (Kimberly), Jonathan Tanner, Lee Armstrong (Jenny), Myra Sellers (Jerry), Cynthia Thomas and Mary Roberson (Robbie) and her step grandchildren, Ryan, Paxton, Collin, Mara, Steven, Katy, Alice, Joshua and Arthur.
