CSM (Ret) Hector Carlos Zapata, 88, passed away April 4, 2022. He was born in Laredo, TX on August 18, 1933. He is survived by his wife; Christiane Zapata, two sons; Mike Zapata (Debbie), Rob Zapata (Donna), two daughters; Maria-Christina Dye (Alan), and Felicia Zapata-Hughes (Spencer), several grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by one daughter, Elizabeth (ZiZi) Cobb. CSM Zapata served in the Army for thirty years, of which 27 years were in Military Police. He served overseas in France, Vietnam, Panama, and Germany. Stateside assignments included Fort Bliss, Texas (Basic Training), Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, Fort Gordon, Georgia and Fort McClellan, Alabama. After retiring from the Military, he worked in Civil Service at Fort Gordon, GA. He was in Fort Gordon Security Guard Force and the Logistics at Eisenhower Army Medical Center. He retired from Civil Service on May 31, 2010. His awards and decorations include; Legion of Merit, Bronze Star w/v device, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with OLC, Vietnam Service Medal Unit Citation, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palms, Army Service Ribbon and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Defense Service Medal. A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM Friday, April 8, 2022 at Westover Memorial Park, 2601 Wheeler Road, Augusta, GA 30904. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Hector’s honor to Forces United 701 Greene Street, Augusta, GA 30901.
