David Scott Hanson, Sr.

May 20, 1918 — June 11, 2009

Augusta, GA – David Scott Hanson, Sr., long time Augusta businessman and civic leader, died of natural causes at University Hospital on Thursday, June 11, 2009. He was 91.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, June 15, 2009 at Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church with Dr. Leslie Holmes officiating.

David came to Augusta in 1959 to head the Ross Builders Supply store on Ft. Gordon Highway. Subsequently, he became District Manager overseeing five stores in Georgia and South Carolina. Upon the sale of Ross to the Wickes Corporation, he joined First National Bank & Trust (now Sun Trust) as Vice President. He completed his career as a stockbroker with Robinson-Humphrey, retiring in 1983.

Born in Cleveland, OH on May 20, 1918 David was the son of Elman Scott Hanson and Edith Mason Hanson. He attended Western Reserve Academy and graduated from Princeton University in 1940. He served in the Navy in World War II.

A past president of the South Carolina Princeton Alumni Association, David also served as president of the Board of the Augusta YMCA when funds were successfully raised for a new building on Wheeler Road, was Chairman of the Augusta Red Cross and a Board member of Augusta Junior Achievement, the Georgia Heart Association and the South Carolina Nature Conservancy. He served as a Deacon of Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church and was a past member of the Augusta Country Club and the Princeton Club of New York. While living in Modoc, SC, he became interested in the work and goals of the McCormick Arts Council. In recognition of his long association and many contributions to that organization, a gallery was named in his honor in 2007.

David is survived by his wife of 64 years, Eleanor Allan Hanson of Augusta; four children, David Scott Hanson, Jr., of Atlanta, Christopher Allan Hanson of North Augusta, Stephen O’Neill Hanson of Charleston and Mary Alden Hanson of Wake Forest, NC; and six grandsons.

David will be remembered for his quick wit, easy smile and personal integrity.
