Coach Douglas Arnold Holland, 72, beloved husband of Dorene Ward Holland, entered into rest on August 16, 2023 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
The family will receive friends at Platt’s Belair Road Chapel on Friday evening, August 18, 2023 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
Coach was a graduate of Georgia Southern University and Georgia College. He began his teaching and coaching career in 1976 in Glascock County, GA. Coach retired in 2007 after many years of teaching and coaching both girls’ softball and baseball. After his retirement he loved spending time fishing at the lake or hunting in Burke County. Coach also loved spending time “piddling” in his shop and collecting pocketknives. He was a good man who believed in doing things the right way and following the rules to the letter of the law.
Coach’s cousin Tommy shared this memory:
We never called him Doug, he was always Dougie, the oldest son of my dad's brother Dimsy. He was the oldest of our generation of cousins and always around when we visited my Grandma Holland growing up. A great athlete and loved so much as a local sports hero. He was always a good guy, always in a good mood.
In addition to his wife Dorene, Coach is survived by his children, Wade Holland (Dana) and Leah Holland Story (Pete); his grandchildren, Ansleigh Holland, Karleigh Holland, Morgan Guion, Hunter Holland, Layla Story and Ridge Story; one great-grandchild; and his brothers, Tellie Holland and Curt Peterson (Jodi).
