Dr. Edwin Douglas Joy Jr.

Cdr. Dr. Edwin Douglas Joy, Jr. DDS (USNR Ret), professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery, quietly entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, April 18, 2023 at his home.

A mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 11:30 AM at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church, 4921 Columbia Road, Grovetown, Georgia, with the Rev. Mike Ingram officiating. Burial will follow at Bellevue Memorial Gardens.

He was born on June 15, 1933, in Bridgeport, Connecticut to Edwin D. Joy, Sr. and Bernadette F. Joy. He attended Yale University and was a member of the class of 1954 before starting dental school at the University of Pennsylvania. He graduated in 1958 and started his residency in oral surgery at the Medical College of Virginia under Dr. S. Elmer Bear. He practiced privately in Norfolk, Virginia until 1971, when he became professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery at the Medical College of Virginia. In 1975, he was appointed professor and chairman of the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery at the Medical College of Georgia, a position he held for the next 20 years. He served his profession in many capacities over the years, and received numerous awards for excellence in teaching, surgery, research and leadership. His skills as a lecturer on various topics in the field of dentistry were in high demand around the world. In 1996 He re-entered private practice and retired in 2009.

Dr. Joy also enjoyed a long career in the United States Navy and Naval reserves. He served on active duty from 1958 to 1962 and did his sea duty aboard the heavy cruiser USS Newport News. In 1982, he retired from the Naval reserves with the rank of Commander.

A lifelong sailor and an active member of the Augusta Sailing Club since 1976, he served the club as treasurer and commodore, and was a USCG licensed captain. His other recreational passion was barbershop singing. After joining the Garden City Barbershop Chorus of Augusta, he, of course, became its president.

Survivors include his sons, Edwin D. Joy III (Amy) and David M. Joy, his granddaughter, Devin Joy Brown (Nick), his great grandchildren, Charles N. Brown, Jr. and Ryver Grace Brown, as well as a brother, Richard Joy (Amanda). He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Edwards Joy, his parents, Edwin and Bernadette, his brother, Bernard F. Joy and a grandson, David M. Joy, Jr.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday and Friday evening, April 27 and 28 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
