Dr. James Wendell Duncan, Sr., of Grovetown, Georgia, died January 7th, 2023 at his home in Grovetown, Georgia after a long battle with cancer. “Wendell” was the son of Donald and Mary Duncan.
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Janice Rabun Duncan and two sons Russ (Allison) and Jay (Rebecca) and three beautiful grandchildren, Jacob, AnnaBeth and Jeremiah, two cats and a dog. The family enjoyed lake life together and spent many years there making memories. He also leaves behind brothers, David, Charlton and Doug Duncan.
Dr. Duncan was a graduate of Mercer University and the Medical College of Georgia. He completed his Residency at the Greenville Hospital System and the Shriners Hospital, and did his Fellowship in Hand surgery at the Hand Center of Charleston in SC. J. Wendell Duncan, MD was an AAOS Fellow, and specialized in hand surgery. He practiced 2 years in Easley, SC, and 33 years at Augusta Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Specialists Augusta, Georgia until his retirement in 2018. He served as president of the medical staff at Doctors Hospital Augusta, Chair of Orthopedic Surgery, as well as chairman of the Ethics Committee and Impaired Physicians Committee. He was the recipient of the HCA Healthcare Frist Humanitarian Award named after the founder, Dr. Thomas F. Frist, Sr. He was very active in the Georgia Orthopedic society where he eventually served as Georgia Orthopedic Society President and President of the GOS foundation. He was the recipient of the Funk Award in 2022 for distinguished service. He always felt his greatest accomplishment was his many years serving his Lord, Jesus Christ. He was an active member of Warren Church, where he served as Deacon and Life Group Teacher. He was instrumental in the development of both foreign medical missions and community ministry at Warren. He actively helped co-lead medical mission trips to Ecuador and Haiti. He was also very active with Samaritans Purse’s Operation Christmas Child. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Samaritans Purse or Warren Church Foundation. Celebration of life will be held at Warren Baptist Church on Tuesday January 17th, at 5:00pm
