Dr. Thomas Owen Abney, beloved husband of Jeanie, entered into rest on Monday, September 30, 2024.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the chapel of Platts Funeral Home Belair Road on Sunday, October 20, 2024 at 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends one hour prior. As Dr. Abney was a sports fan, in particular an avid Bulldog fan, guests are invited to wear the attire of their favorite sports team.
Dr. Abney was born in Eustis, Florida in 1943 to Dewy and Mildred Sutton Abney, but grew up in Nashville, Georgia. He attended schools in Berrien County, graduating in 1961. To further his higher education, Tom attended Berry College, Valdosta State University and the University of Georgia where he earned a PhD in Biochemistry. After completing a post doctorate at the University of Texas in Austin, Dr. Abney began his career at the Medical College of Georgia in the Department of Physiology as a research scientist. After 30 years of service, Dr. Abney retired as honorary professor emeritus.
In addition to his wife, Jeanie, he is survived by his daughter/granddaughter, Hannah Abney; stepson Brian (Nesa) Godbee; step grandson Jordan (Cydny) Godbee; his two sisters Joyann (Ted) Lindsey and Evelyn NeSmith; sister-in-law, Jan Abney; four nieces and nephews; and three great niece and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests you make a donation in Dr. Abney's memory to your favorite charity.
