Elizabeth Webb Griffin died peacefully on September 26, 2024. She was born in Marion, Alabama on May 24, 1939, the youngest of seven children born to Annie Lee Harris and James Corbett Griffin. Elizabeth (Liz) was named in honor of Mrs. Charles Alexander Webb (Miss Bessie), who was a very special and supportive friend of the Griffin Family. The kindness and generosity of Mrs. Webb provided Liz with many artistic and cultural experiences in her young life, all of which affected her entire life in so many wonderful ways.
Liz is predeceased by brothers Jimmy Griffin and William Byrd Griffin, and by sisters Mary Auburtin, Mildred Yelverton and Eleanor Griffin. She is survived by her sister, Rebecca Culpepper, and seven special nephews and nieces.
Following high school graduation, Liz attended Auburn University, graduating in 1961. She was an active member of Kappa Delta Sorority and was also involved in many campus activities and groups. Later she earned her Masters Degree in Counseling in Higher Education at the University of Alabama. Following graduation, she accepted a newly created position of Admissions Counselor in the Student Affairs Division at the Medical College of Georgia in Undergraduate Admissions. She spent her new career at MCG, becoming Director of Undergraduate Admissions.
After graduating from Auburn, Liz taught elementary school in Fort Walton Beach, Florida and later for the U.S. Department of Defense Schools in Germany (Babenhausen and Munich). While teaching there she traveled extensively during summers and holidays. Her travels took her to many interesting cities and countries, including the USSR cities of Kiev, Moscow and Georgia, as well as other cities in Crimea and Yalta around the Black Sea area. She visited the Middle East, The Holy Land, and Slavic and Scandinavian countries. Her travels included Cairo, where she rode atop a lead camel in a race to the great Pyramid. Liz won that race, by the way!
Traveling, golfing, tennis and bridge afforded Liz cherished memories of great times with wonderful and interesting friends. She treasured her friends. She attended the Masters Golf Tournament with one special friend (Octavia Garlington) for thirty-five years.
Liz proudly leaves as her legacy the many students to whom she provided career counseling, both in her office and on her various recruiting trips around the state. She believed strongly in giving back to the community. In so doing, she served in leadership positions on Boards of Directors of the YWCA, Safe Homes of Augusta, The Friendship House, and Girls, Inc. She was in Leadership Augusta, Class of 1982 and was elected to the Board of Directors for five years. She volunteered for many summers in Cashiers, N.C. at the Free Dental Clinic.
Liz retired from the Medical College of Georgia in 2000. She spent many summers in her house in Cashiers, N.C. and finally in assisted living at The Barclay House of Augusta, GA. A member of The Church of the Good Shepherd for many years, Liz served on the Vestry and was involved in many activities of the church. She loved her church. Liz organized and co-chaired the first Interfaith Hospitality, now known as Family Promise.
