George "Buddy" Applewhite

Mr. George “Buddy” Applewhite, 82, of Evans, Georgia beloved husband of June Applewhite, entered into rest on Tuesday, June 27, 2023.


Buddy was an Augusta native, born on May 19, 1941 to his parents Anne Beatrice Murphy Applewhite and Claude Lee Applewhite and was the youngest of three brothers. He married Brenda June Ayers of Royston, Georgia on July 24, 1966. Buddy retired from BellSouth Telephone Company after thirty-five years of employment and was active in the Communication Workers of America Union. He served in many union positions, including president, secretary/treasurer, trainer/facilitator, and lobbyist. He was also a member of Telephone Pioneers of America. After graduating from Richmond Academy Buddy proudly served his country for six years in the Army National Guard.


Buddy had many hobbies and interests including hunting and fishing with his son, Brian and granddaughter, Kaitlyn. He enjoyed sunset boat rides and fishing at the lake with family and friends, and he was a member of the El Casino Boating Club at Clarks Hill Lake. Buddy especially enjoyed gem prospecting and gold panning, and was the manager of Heritage Gold Mine Park in McCormick, SC. He was co-owner of Primitive Art, a gem and mineral business, and a member of the Augusta Gem and Mineral Society. Buddy also taught clogging and country dance along with June and Brian as the Apple Cloggers.


Buddy is survived by his wife of 57 years, June, his son, Brian Applewhite (Tricia) and granddaughter, Kaitlyn Applewhite (Wesley Morgan) of Taylors, SC along with nieces Cathy Brown (Sid), Arloa Dolphin (Brien), Robin Applewhite, and many grand nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers, John “Sonny” Applewhite and William “Billy” Applewhite.


A memorial service/celebration of life will be held at 12:00pm on Saturday, July 22, 2023 in the chapel of Platt’s Funeral Home Belair Road, with Chaplain Earl Welch officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00am to 12:00pm prior to the service.
