James E. Thompson

Mr. James “Buzzy” Edgar Thompson Jr. entered into rest on Tuesday, March 28, 2023, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 PM on Saturday, April 8,2023 in the chapel of Platts Funeral Home Belair Road. The family will receive friends on Friday evening, April 7 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.

Mr. Thompson, an Augusta native, was a long-time member of the Palmetto Volleyball Association as a coach and official. He was a veteran of the US Army and had been employed with Textron for 42 years.

He is survived by his children, Jillyan Beasley (Cody) and Jayme Angel (Brandon), his parents, Jim and June Thompson, his grandchildren, June Beasley and Austin Angel and his brother, Joseph E. Thompson (Kim). He’s also survived by nieces and nephew, Lauren Rathburn, Ashlee Thompson, Jessica Thompson and Cash Thompson, a sister in law, Jessica Cunningham (Scott), his beloved cat, Dixie, and his buddies from the Bad Boys Volleyball Club.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Jeffrey and his sister, Janice.

He loved his friends and family and would go to the ends of the world to do what every may have been needed done. Buzzy loved volleyball and helped put volleyball on the map for Augusta, Georgia. He touched many lives through playing this sport. He played indoor and outdoor volleyball for over 30 years and officiated collegiate matches for over 20 years. Buzzy also had a love for traveling and taking his daughters to as many places as possible. He wanted to show his daughters the world and that is exactly what he did.

“We love you dad and know you are up there playing volleyball with Uncle Goat and Uncle Wayne, while Uncle Jeffrey is cracking jokes with you again.”

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the CSRA Heat Volleyball Club, 259 Deerwood Drive, Martinez, Ga., 30907.
