Augusta

James Nicholas “Nick” Shaw, 78, of Augusta, Georgia, passed away peacefully at his home on December 17, 2024.

Born on November 8, 1946, Nick was the son of the Reverand J. Sam Shaw and Nellie McClain Shaw. He was a proud graduate of the University of Georgia, where he earned a BBA in Accounting. He remained a passionate Georgia Bulldogs football fan and always enjoyed rooting on his “Dirty Dawgs”.

Nick was a Certified Public Accountant and had a distinguished career in the accounting and financial fields for over four decades. He started his career at Henderson, Shaw & Co. and spent 13 years there. He was the Practice Administrator for Dr. Joseph M. Still for over a decade. In this role, he played a key part in helping Dr. Still establish the Joseph M. Still Burn Center and was a founding member of the (former) Southeastern Firefighter’s Burn Foundation. Nick also spent 20 years as a Financial Advisor with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney. During this time, he earned the prestigious titles of Senior Investment Management Consultant and Certified Investment Management Analyst (SM), credentials granted by the Investment Management Consultants' Association in partnership with The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.

Nick was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Aubrey V. Shaw and J. Calvin Shaw. He is survived by his nieces and nephews, Kim S. Ball (Jim), Scott M. Shaw (Alison), and Janet S. King (Austin), as well as his great-nieces and great-nephews, Emily Ball, Jeffrey Ball, Morgan Shaw, McClain Shaw, Hadley King, and Hudson King. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Jane W. Shaw, and many extended family members and dear friends.

Nick was a devoted animal lover, leaving behind his beloved "furbabies," Riley and Rascal. In honor of his deep affection for his two cherished cats, those wishing to honor Nick’s memory are encouraged to contribute to That’s What Friends Are For, Inc, (https://thatswhatfriendsarefor.org/), or to an animal rescue organization or a charity meaningful to them.

The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Nick’s devoted caregivers, Debra Middlebrooks, Antionette Savoy, and Louise Byrd, as well as his hospice nurse, Denny Joyce, for their loving support.

Nick lived his life with enthusiasm and a spirit of adventure. Whether he was playing a round of golf, driving fun cars fast, shooting a game of pool, running a marathon, playing Blackjack in Las Vegas, singing and playing his guitar, or cheering on his “Dirty Dogs’, he embraced every moment with joy and passion. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him, inspiring all to live fully, just as he did.

A celebration of Nick’s life will be held at a later date.
