Johnny Morris Williams

Johnny Morris Williams passed away on June 4th, 2024, at the age of 78. He faced his battle with serious medical issues in recent years with the same steadfast loyalty and faith that he displayed through life.

Johnny was welcomed into Heaven by his late wife of 55 years, Victoria Resnick Williams. Johnny was born February 9th, 1946, to the late Palmer and Betty Williams, in Lyons, GA. In a small community known as Cedar Crossing, just a few miles south of Lyons, is the location of the old Williams’ home place. It is there where his parents and many Aunts and Uncles raised their families, grew roots, and farmed the land. The large Williams family was known for giving each other nicknames. Johnny, being tall and skinny, was bestowed the nick name of “Johnny Legs”. After spending his youth farming, his family relocated to the Augusta, Georgia area where he attended high school and met his future wife, Vickie. He was a 1964 graduate of the Academy of Richmond County. A highlight of his 1964 graduation dance was a live performance by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Johnny’s favorite song until his death was “Rag Doll”.

 Johnny honorably served his country as a Reservist with the 319th Transportation Company as an active-duty soldier in Long Binh, Vietnam. His experience within his Company, commonly referred to as “Troxler’s Truckers”, led to a lifetime career as a truck driver with ABF Freight. One of the highlights of his career were the years he made deliveries to the Augusta National Golf Club and volunteered with the ANGC Pro Shop-- and the subsequent opportunities to play the coveted course.

 He was a proud past Worshipful Master Mason of Acacia Masonic Lodge and enjoyed years of mentoring those following in his footsteps. He served the Lord faithfully as a former Deacon, member of the Choir, and as a High School Sunday School teacher at Immanuel Baptist Church in North Augusta, SC.

Johnny’s experience as a truck driver made him an expert navigator of the roads in the CSRA area. While there was hardly an area that he was unfamiliar with, he liked to rely on his quick-witted, humorous approach to describe where he grew up as “Plum Nelly...Plum Out of Harrisburg, Nelly to Frog Hollow”. He was a history buff and loved watching old M*A*S*H* and Gunsmoke reruns.

 His experience as a young farmer facilitated his love for fishing, hunting and camping. He shared this love with family and friends, including his wife, Vickie. He was certainly the Happy Camper the day that they were reunited.

Johnny is survived by his daughter, Heather Sox (Wade), son Dean Williams (Karena), his five grandchildren, Steven Sox (Melissa), Camryn Sox, Carson Williams, Brock Williams, Dean Williams,Jr., and his greatgranddaughter, Sunny Sox. He is also survived by his two sisters, Beverly Lowenstein and Pamela Williams, and multiple nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, Johnny was preceded in death by his brother, Jerry Williams.

 Family, friends, and others whose lives Johnny touched are invited to visit Platts Funeral Home, 721 Crawford Avenue, Augusta, Geogia, from 10:00am – 11:00am on Saturday, June 8th, 2024. Funeral service will immediately follow visitation in the Chapel.
