Joseph Daniel Smith, Jr., age eighty-four, entered into the presence of the Lord on February 23rd. Born in Atlanta, Mr. Smith was a longtime resident of Augusta. A Naval Air Corps veteran and a 1949 graduate of the University of Georgia, he was the co-owner of Southern Milling Company. Across the years of his business career in Augusta, he also served as Vice-President of Metropolitan State Bank, was co-developer of National Hills shopping center and residential neighborhood, and also served as an Advisory Board member of First Union Bank and as a president of the Kiwanis Club of uptown Augusta. He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Augusta where he had served as Sunday School Director and Chair of the Board of Deacons, and was an original member of the Crusaders Sunday School Class. He was an outdoor enthusiast who greatly enjoyed hunting and fishing. Mr. Smith is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Daniel and Sarah Maude Smith, his brother, William H. Smith, and sisters Mildred Bell and Barbara Bond. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of fifty-seven years, Hazel Wommack Smith, five children; Angela Polston of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Marcia Poole of Jackson, Mississippi, Danny Smith of Simpsonville, South Carolina, Bradley Smith of Simpsonville, South Carolina, and Gina Wheat of Madison, Mississippi, along with their spouses. Also surviving are ten grandchildren, three great grandchildren and four sisters; Clyde Walthour of Dallas, Georgia, Clara Brown of Greenville, South Carolina, Maxine Sims of Evans, Georgia, and Beverly Troutman of St. George Island, Florida. Funeral services for Mr. Smith will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 26th, in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Augusta, followed by burial at Westover Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at Platt's Funeral Home at 337 North Belair Road in Evans on Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Chapel Fund of First Baptist Church of Augusta. The family wishes to express their deep gratitude for the wonderful care Mr. Smith received from his physicians Dr. William Neumann, Dr. Paul Cundy, Jr., and Dr. Paul Cundy, III, and from the staff at Brandon Wilde Pavilion.
