Mrs. Pauline LePage Thomas Bailey died at Piedmont Hospital on June 6, 2024 surrounded by her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Dr. Joseph Peyton Bailey Jr. She is survived by her son Joseph Peyton Bailey III (Sarah) of Augusta Georgia, daughter Cynthia LePage Gunnels (Chris) of Augusta Georgia, granddaughter Margaret MacKinnon Bailey (Arturo), grandson Christopher Bailey Gunnels, grandson Joseph Peyton Bailey IV, grandson Benjamin Alexander Gunnels, grandson Patrick Thomas Gunnels, grandson Joseph Ryan Gunnels, granddaughter Abigail LePage Gunnels, and sister Ann Thomas Sherman (Harry).
Mrs. Bailey was born in Adam’s Run South Carolina to parents George P. and Pauline T. Thomas on June 12, 1931. Graduating Saint Paul’s high school in 1949, she then took a job with the FBI in Washington DC, before moving to Augusta in 1953 and enrolling in the Barrett School of Nursing. She received her RN in 1955.
While she was in nursing school, she met and later married Dr. Joseph Peyton Bailey Jr. During the first few years of their marriage, they resided in Puerto Rico and Texas but eventually moved back to Augusta where they had met. Mrs. Bailey was an active supporter of many of the medical organizations and groups Dr. Bailey was involved with, such as The Richmond County Medical Society, The Medical Association of Georgia, The American College of Rheumatology, and the American Medical Association.
Mrs. Bailey herself was involved in many organizations such as the Nurses Alumni Association, the Junior League of Augusta, the Wood Valley Garden Club, Good Shepard Episcopal Church, and the Medical College of Georgia Medical Auxiliary. She was a member of the Augusta Country Club and the French Huguenot Society of Charleston South Carolina.
She had many interests in life. She loved music having learned to play the piano at an early age and enjoyed singing. She was proud to say that she and her other “sister” Pat Knox, had hiked almost half of the Appalachian Trail. She traveled to Europe, Hawaii and throughout the US, but the place she loved to visit the most was Edisto Island South Carolina. Dr. Bailey had said many times that he could reduce her blood pressure simply by driving her over the bridge onto Edisto.
The family would like to especially thank all of the caregivers that helped provide for her in her final weeks.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 13, 2024 at Westover Memorial Park.
