Mary Lehmann Speir

January 7, 1941 — January 22, 2021

Mary Lehmann Speir was born to Eugenia “Genie” Selden and Albert H. Lehmann in Augusta, Georgia on January 7, 1941, the youngest of three daughters. She died of direct and collateral complications of novel corona virus infection at University Hospital. Her loving husband of 57 years, William Speir, MD, was at her bedside holding her hand when she died and went “gently into that goodnight” at 3:00 PM, Friday, January 22, 2021

Mary went to William Robinson School and the Academy of Richmond County, Mary Washington College in Fredricksburg, Virginia, transferred to the School of Nursing at Medical College of Georgia from which she received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1964.

Mary made her debut with the Augusta Assembly, was a member of the Junior League of Augusta, the Town and Country Garden Club, the Augusta Women’s Club, the Society of Colonial Dames, a Dame Commander, Priory of St. Vincent, Sovereign Military Order of the Temple of Jerusalem (Knights Templar), the Alumni Advisory Board to the College of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau, the American College of Chest Physicians Ambassadors group, the Pinnacle Club and other organizations, as well as a former Trustee of the Henry King Trust and was an active member of the Pendleton King Park Foundation.

Mary was a dearly beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to many. She was loving, caring, gentle, and kind. She will be sorely missed.

Her last request was a simple graveside service at Summerville Cemetery with the Order of Burial of the dead from the 1928 Book of Common Prayer. Attendance is limited with strict pandemic precautions. To be followed in the near future, after the elderly and vulnerable are vaccinated and weather improves, with a memorial service for family, dear friends, and others.

Please, no flowers. Memorial contributions to funds in her memory at St. Paul Episcopal Church Altar Guild, Music Program and Church Chaplaincies at hospitals, the Pendleton King Park Foundation, the Town and Country Garden Club, Augusta Women’s Club, or favorite charities.

A more complete obituary will follow in the announcement of her memorial service.

Her husband and her dear Carolina Dog, hound “daughter” ask for privacy during our period of intense grief and devastation.
