Mrs. A. Rose Wilkerson, beloved wife of Harvel Wilkerson for nearly 60 years, entered into rest on Tuesday, September 8, 2020 at her residence.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, September 14, 2020 at The Assembly at Augusta with Pastor Brandon Lanier and Pastor Baxter Stanley officiating. Burial will follow at Bellevue Memorial Gardens.
Born and raised in Jacksonville, FL, Rose was the youngest of the five children born to Robert and Christine Howell. Like her brother and sisters before her, she attended St Paul’s Catholic School. In 1961, at age 19, she met and married the love of her life, a young Georgia-born country boy, Harvel Wilkerson. She called him Harv. Theirs was a love and relationship no one could question. Very little could keep them apart. Even when his draft card was pulled and Harv went dutifully to war, their commitment was strong. Upon the end of his tour, Harv re-enlisted and made the US Army his career for the next 22 years. Orders for an unaccompanied tour to Korea did not stop Rose from jumping on a plane, with two-year-old Becky, and traveling across the globe to be with her man. The US Army extended grace to this devoted wife, but also extended the tour of duty in Korea. This was the beginning of several international moves Rose and Harv would make as a family.
Rose was a devoted wife, but also mother to Becky and David. Together they would respond to the US Army call to relocate approximately every three years, covering territory across the southeastern US, Korea, and Germany. In 1985, plans for retirement brought them back to Georgia, and close to their Jacksonville home base.
Through the years and travel, Rose and Harv were always faithful to become plugged into a local church or fellowship. Rose had a heart and calling for ministry. She routinely facilitated prayer meetings and Bible studies with friends and neighbors, who would in turn invite their friends and neighbors. It was obvious, ministry was her vocation. These ministry connections brought another member to the family – a new daughter. Barely 10 months stateside and still living in a small temporary apartment, Rose and Harv invited 17 year-old Angelica into the family with open arms. To Rose, faith and family was everything.
In addition to her husband, Harvel, she is survived by her children; Becky Godbee (Bill), David Wilkerson (Tasha) and Angelica Dean, her grandchildren; Liam Godbee, Mason Godbee, Rhys Godbee, Paul Fulton, David Wilkerson, Jr., Zach Braddy, Zeph Braddy, Lewie Wilkerson, Jonathan Robinson, Alicia Robinson, Charnaya Dunn and Breanna Robinson, as well as a sister in law, Patricia Howell and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother and sisters, Bob Howell, Gertie Stringer, Mary Barnes and Chris Parker, and son-in-law Tyrone Dean.
The family will receive friends at The Assembly on Sunday evening, September 13, 2020 from 5:00 until 7:00 PM.
If so desired, memorial contributions may be made to The Assembly at Augusta Grounds and Building Fund, 4207 Wheeler Road, Augusta, Georgia 30907.
