Nancy McLeod

January 11, 1947 — January 12, 2025

Augusta

The stars have dimmed. Our bright light, our North Star, our Nancy, left us on January 11, 2025; and this world will never be the same.

Nancy McLeod entered this world in Miami, Florida, on January 11, 1947. Much like Alexander Hamilton (also born on January 11), Nancy was intellectual, tenacious, creative, and brave—a true visionary. Though she never challenged anyone to a duel, she most certainly challenged ideas and attitudes. In 1969, at the tail end of segregation, she began teaching at Immaculate Conception School (I.C.) on Laney Walker Blvd. She saw the beautiful, bright smiling faces of the children on the playground dressed in their blue and white uniforms and knew that was her calling. She remained at I.C., happily serving as a teacher and Vice Principal, for 32 years.

A true bibliophile, she was a voracious reader who loved books, which is evident from her vast library. But she loved so, so many things: a witty quote, a beautiful painting, a spirited debate, a fine antique, impeccable design, animals (especially dogs) and of course Jimmy and Nicole.

Being the wife of Jimmy, her husband of 54 years, and the mother of Nicole were her utmost priorities, and she put them above all else. She loved them wholly and deeply; an unwavering wife, mother, and friend. A constant, noble person. A splendid, spectacular force.

She is now with her beloved ones—Chopman, Sir Scout, and Serendipity—who we feel most certain greeted her at the gates.

Nancy once told us that she wasn’t going to die, she was simply going to become magical. She said, “When I become magical, I’m going to put a stop to that.” But what our dear sweet Nancy did not know is what we all already knew—what everyone knew—she didn’t have to become magical because she already was. Always and forever.
