Sfc Roy L. Broussard, Ret.

AUGUSTA - SFC Roy L. Broussard Ret. (91) passed away peacefully November 25, 2022 in Augusta, Georgia. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on November 24, 1931.

After completing Basic Training at Ft. Polk in Louisiana, Roy was stationed at Ft. Lewis in Washington for Advanced Infantry Training. He was assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division 9th Infantry Regiment A Company.

He shipped out to Korea in June of 1950. Roy began to see action as his group and UN and Allied Forces moved up to North Korea. On November 28th - 30th, Roy was locked in hand to hand combat fighting day and night against thousands of Chinese

Communist and North Koreans. These actions took place in the mountains and at “The Gauntlet.” Roy was captured December 1st, 1950 at Kuni-Ri. He was wounded and out of ammunition, food, and

was eating snow for water. The weather at times was -30 degrees. Over 4,000 Americans lost their lives.

Roy spent the next two years and eight months as a POW in Camp 5 on the Yalu River. Years later, Roy received The Bronze Star with V for Valor, for his actions taken in late November.

Roy continued his military career including serving with the 82nd Airborne and completing the Jungle Expert Survival School in Panama. He served two tours in Vietnam and was Honorably Discharged in 1970. Roy loved America and never regretted the price he paid to be an American. In 1976, Roy graduated from Augusta College with a degree in Psychology

and a minor in French. He was a Mason and an excellent guitar player.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Leomie Broussard of Crowley, LA and his beloved wife, Ruth Freeman Broussard.

He is survived by his children: Michael Carr Broussard, of Reeves, LA. Sandra Meche, of Orange, TX. Roy Lee Broussard, of Statesville, NC. Raymona Shirmard, of Benicia, CA. He’s also survived by his stepchildren, Collette Clark and G. Porter Freeman of Augusta, GA. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
