Sherwood Vaughn

Sherwood Vaughn of Martinez, GA passed away on December 15, 2023. A native of Baxley,

GA, Sherwood was born on June 17, 1945 to Paul and Beatrice Arnold Vaughn. He was part of

a large family of ten siblings, and this is where his love of sports began. While proudly playing

basketball for Appling County High School, he met the love of his life, and he and Jane Carter

married when she graduated. They were side by side for 58 years.

Working in the retail grocery industry, Sherwood and his family moved to meet company needs,

and their family grew. He was transferred to McRae, GA with Piggly Wiggly, and the couple

welcomed Kellie in 1966. Later, in 1968, Mark was born, and the family would be transferred to

Waycross, GA. Here, in 1974, Sharon would be born.

Sherwood and his family would move to Martinez, GA in 1977. In 1984, he joined the Kroger

company and began a long career as meat department manager. As the children grew up, he

spent his spare time coaching little league baseball and refereeing and umpiring multiple sports.

Many folks can trace their sports careers back to Sherwood Vaughn as their little league coach.

For years, he could be seen at every Greenbrier and Lakeside football game where his

grandsons played.

After retiring from Kroger as a meat merchandising specialist, he kept busy regularly meeting his former coworkers, spending time with his granddaughters, and playing cards with his buddies. For many years, he and his beloved brother in law, Junior Steedley, traveled to Spring Training in Florida to watch baseball -- especially the Braves! Stories of their adventures are shared among the family to this day.

Sherwood was a hard worker, loved his family, and attended Martinez Baptist Church. In

addition to his wife, Jane, he is survived by his children, Dr. Kellie Lane-McElroy (Dr. Chris

McElroy), Mark Vaughn (Shanda), Sharon Blitch (Derrek) and Harry Lane, his former son-in-law

who he loved like a son. He is also survived by his brother and sisters, Roger Vaughn, Reba

McLeod, Peggy Middleton , Bobbie Johnson, Joyce Stover and Betty Sue Boatwright, his

grandchildren, Jonathan Lane (Debbie), Jacob Lane (Megan), Christine Blitch, Caroline Blitch,

Brinkley Vaughn, Riley Lane, Jake McElroy, Matthew McElroy and Joshua McElroy, his two

great grandchildren, Carter Lane and Andrew Lane, and a sister-in-law, Ettie Mae Vaughn. He

was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Raymond, Thurmon, and David Vaughn.

The family will receive friends at Platts Funeral Home on Monday evening, December 18, 2023

from 5:00 until 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, December 19,

2023 at the Platts Chapel. Burial will follow in the afternoon at 3:30 PM at Ten Mile Creek

Baptist Church Cemetery, 3785 Ten Mile Road in Baxley, GA.
