Sylvester Arlen Smith

July 3, 1932 — February 28, 2024

SGM Sylvester Arlen Smith, US Army (RET), beloved husband of the late Macy June (Jones) Smith, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at his residence in Evans, GA.

Funeral services will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.

Mr. Smith was born in Henrytown, Virginia to Garnet and Hazel Smith. He joined the military at age 16 and served in combat in both Korea and Vietnam. He rose to the rank of Sergeant Major on his 37th birthday while in Vietnam and retired from Fort Gordon, GA after 30 years of military service. He then went to work for Georgia Power at Plant Vogtle before retiring a second time. He enjoyed time at Sunset Beach, NC and with his family and will be remembered as a faithful husband and loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He is survived by his children, Kathleen Copeland (Steve) and Deborah Harvey (Michael), a brother, Ronald Smith, his grandchildren, Keith Copeland (Jessica), Calista Harvey, Brittany Goodman (Ben) and Rebecca Carpenter (Travis) and his great-grandchildren, Ashli Copeland, Madison Gambrell, Jacob Martin, Macy Gambrell, Camden Goodman, Hudson Goodman, Maddox Carpenter and Eden Carpenter, as well as his special friends and neighbors, Art and Carole Robb and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Marie Oakes, Wayne Smith, Jack Smith, Tommy Smith and Nancy Repass.
