The Honorable Michael N. Annis

April 18, 1952 — November 28, 2022

Senior Superior Court Judge Michael Norville Annis was called to his heavenly home on November 28, 2022, surrounded by his loving family at his home in Grovetown, Georgia.

Judge Annis was born on April 18, 1952, in Augusta, Georgia, to Betty “BJ” Allen and Lawrence Vincent Annis. He was received into God’s Covenant of Grace through baptism at Abilene Baptist Church, where he would later marry Gina, the love of his life and his devoted wife of 34 years. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Jennifer, Emily and Michael. He spent his youth on Glenn Avenue, near Augusta College, making friends who would stay with him throughout his life. An accomplished sailboat racer, Judge Annis had been a member of the Augusta Sailing Club his entire life.

If asked, Judge Annis would say he experienced a mostly fortunate life, endowed by grace far beyond anything deserved. He believed that he paid modest dues in a small number of disappointments and a few serious challenges, and yet he viewed his life as uplifting, exciting, surprising, loving, fulfilling, productive and, at times, exhilarating. He always thought that life should not be judged by the number of years lived, but rather by the deeper meaning experienced through love and service. A devoted father and grandfather, his driving passion was spending time with his family.

Following graduation from the Academy of Richmond County, Judge Annis graduated from Augusta College where he was a member of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, attained his law degree from Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University, and received his Master of Laws at University of Florida Law School. Judge Annis’ career as a lawyer included private practice, 12 years as a prosecutor in the Toombs Circuit, and finally 18 years as a superior court judge, from which he retired February 1, 2020 as senior judge, and where he was highly regarded by all for his integrity and compassion. He also had previously served as Chairman of the Columbia County Board of Education.

Judge Annis is survived by his wife Gina Morris Annis; his children Jennifer Jacobs, Emily (Adam) Kelm, and Michael Norville (Madelyn) Annis; grandchildren James and Max Jacobs, and Simon and Archer Kelm; brothers Dr. Lawrence V. Annis Jr., David A. Annis (Bonnie), Jeff C. Annis (Beth), Lon N. Annis (Andrea) and sister, Laura Annis Bowen (Michael); sister-in-law Brenda Morris and brother-in-law Allen Fuller; and many loved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Lawrence V. Annis Sr., his mother Betty “BJ” Annis, and his sisters, Martha and Leslie.

The family wishes to thank Judge Annis’ devoted caregivers Tiffany Bosch, Lauren Miller, Paul Smith, and Marvalyn St. Ville. The family also extends special thanks to Chaplain John Williams.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM on Monday, December 5, 2022 at First Baptist Church of Augusta, officiated by the Reverend Bill Harrell and Dr. Brad Whitt. Burial will follow at Westover Memorial Park in Augusta. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00-3:00 PM. Pallbearers will be Michael Allen Annis, Dr. D. Allen Annis, Jr., Justin Annis, Brett Bowen, Clayton Bowen, and John Hobbs.
