Wallis Lee Stone Stevens, beloved wife of the late John Robert “Bobby” Stevens passed away October 5, 2024. She was 85.

Wallis was born in Florence, South Carolina to Aileen Lee and Wallace Thurston Stone on April 21, 1939.

A graduate of the Academy of Richmond County (ARC), Wallis was Honorary Cadet Colonel and Senior Class President. She was spirited, full of personality, and popular. ARC is where she met Bobby Stevens, her husband of 46 years. Together, they had four children: Sabrina Lee, Leslie Adele, John Robert Jr., and Wallace Cato “Steve”. Being a wife, mother, and homemaker never slowed Wallis down. She kept a full vegetable garden and tended to her yard, plants, and flowers. Having an affinity for daylilies, Wallis became a member of the Daylily Club of Augusta and would win many awards for her blooms. With help from her neighbor and fellow member of the Daylily Club, Wallis collected and helped cultivate many common and rare varieties of daylilies. Her yard was filled with them, and she loved sharing them with family, friends, and neighbors. In the spring and early summer, her yard was a magnificent spectacle of color with blooming daylilies and azaleas abound. In addition to gardening, Wallis spent many hours on her hobbies which included sewing, canning, baking, arts and crafts, wood working, painting, square dancing, and eventually traveling the U.S. and abroad in her later years.

Wallis spent ten years working with the Cooperative Extension Service in Richmond County as a 4-H Program Assistant. She had several State and two National winners. She loved her 4-H’ers and devoted a lot of time helping them develop their skills and achieve their personal goals much as she did her own children. She had a real talent for touching everyone she encountered and really knew how to see the best in everyone. She possessed a real talent for bringing out a person’s raw potential and help them become the very best they could be.

Today, we say goodbye to one of Augusta’s most genuine, honest, hardworking, and loving individuals. Wallis was a very special woman whom we will always remember. A part of her will always be with us and we are all better for having known her.

Mrs. Wallis Stevens is survived by three of her four children, Sabrina “Sibbie” Morris (Vic), Leslie Barrett (Tom), Wallace Cato “Steve” Stevens; her sister-in-law, Emily Stevens Baumann; her four grandchildren, Glenn Morris (Anna), Christopher Morris (Dorn), Grace Waters (Chris), and Thomas Barrett (Sara); as well as four great-grandchildren, Thompson Morris, Robert Waters, Cecilia Barrett and Ansley Waters; and other extended family members.

Visitation will be 10 am Friday, October 18, 2024 at Trinity on the Hill Global Methodist Church. Funeral services will follow at 11 am. A private burial for family only will be at Westover Memorial Park.
